Solid rivets are the most basic type of rivet. They consist of a head, a shank, and a bucktail. They are typically used in structural applications and require a hammer or rivet gun to install. Blind rivets, also known as pop rivets, are popular because they can be installed without the need for access to the back side of the material being joined. Blind rivets have a mandrel that pulls the back of the rivet into the mandrel, creating the bucktail. Tubular rivets are hollow and are typically used in applications where the joint needs to be leak-free, such as in the construction of boilers or air ducts.
